There are
a wide variety of businesses in Carmi. Although there are not
as many retail businesses as we would like, we feel very pleased
with the ones we do have and always look forward to new ones
opening up.
The Illinois Department of Revenue reports that 243 businesses
in Carmi paid sales tax during 2001. In that number we have
grocery, shoe, sporting goods, jewelry, clothing, specialty
shops, florist and greenhouse, business equipment and supplies,
eating places, furniture, lumber and hardware, automotive, gas
stations, drug stores, manufacturers and agriculture, farm needs
and supplies, printing services, car dealers, a bed and breakfast,
motels, a Wal-Mart and a Sears store.
The Carmi Chamber of Commerce reports 125 members. These members
include some of those listed above, as well as insurance, oil
companies, utility providers, a newspaper and radio station,
and education, heating, plumbing and electric businesses, as
well as an underground coal mine.
Service businesses dealing with the environment, reclamation
and recycling are also located in Carmi, along with beauty and
barber shops, tanning facilities and Three movie theaters.
There are many professional services accessible in Carmi. There
are four banks, two investment companies, six CPA businesses,
four law firms, a consulting service, Two dentists' offices
and Three doctors' offices. There are two nursing homes and
one hospital located in Carmi.
Social services are available in the offices of the Egyptian
Health Department, Baptist Children's Home & Family Services, Wabash Area Development, Inc., public aid,
the Anna Bixby Women's Center, Red Cross and the Guardian Center.
These agencies serve other counties around Carmi and White County,
as well, with their many programs. |
